Protecting wildlife across the UK
Since we were founded in 2012 we have been campaigning for our British wildlife behind the scenes but now we are going to be more open about the campaigning that we are doing.
This page will soon reflect the two campaigns we are running:
- No More Netting
- Ban on the public sale of rodenticides
No More Netting
The Silent Wildlife Killer and Our Fight Back.
Enough is enough, so after years of talking about it, we are launching our campaign to try and end or at least have some proper regulations around the use of bird netting. We aim to do this initially by gathering as much evidence as possible of birds and other wildlife getting trapped and dying in netting throughout the UK. We then plan to use this evidence to go to councils, businesses, the police and the government to demand change to stop the killing of birds in netting.
We have already worked with a legal firm to better understand the laws around the use of netting, and have come to understand the legal obligations of the use of netting which is currently not understood by the authorities, and allows the illegal cases of birds becoming trapped to go unchallenged. Through this, we have had it confirmed that those allowing pigeons to die in netting are in breach of the law, and that netting being hard to reach, or in poor condition, is no excuse.
We will ask for the following changes.
1 – for those with netting to physically check their netting on their buildings every 25 hours (this is the minimum legal requirement set by DEFRA for captive birds).
2 – if the netting can’t be checked and/or any part of the netting cannot be seen, then it should be removed
3 – for the legal requirement of unmaintained or damaged netting to be repaired or removed to be enforced
4 – if netting owners refuse to act and birds become trapped, for the police/SSPCA/RSPCA to be given guidance on how to prosecute for wildlife crimes under the Animal Welfare Act 2006
5 – to end all netting
6 – Use ridged metal mesh with correct hole sizes instead of current netting. (This requires enforcement if contractors seal birds in behind mesh, to release any trapped birds)
HOW YOU CAN HELP
We are asking for everyone to share this campaign and if you have seen posts or in-person incidents where birds have become stuck in netting, to send me a private message with the location and dates of the incident. We want old and new incidents to build up our case for change. Please send the following if you can but even just the location will help.
1 – Exact location of netting
2 – Date when this had happened
3 – Photos of birds in netting.
This information will build up the evidence that changes are needed around bird netting.
With YOUR help we might just be able to affect change in enforcement, regulation or the law and help stop more birds dying in netting.
